How often have we been crushed by someone in authority over us? A boss, a coach, a mum or dad, older brother or sister, a leader. People we trust and look up to. Their very words can help us soar or can bury us in an instant.

A king’s rage is like the roar of a lion, but his favor is like dew on the grass.
Proverbs 19:12

People who have positions of authority or power, sometimes forget the difference.

Power is taken and forced upon those it controls. Authority is given by those being led.

A example of this is that of a Policeman. When he steps out into the middle of the road and raises his hand for you to stop, two things can happen. 1. You stop, or 2. you don’t. What makes you stop? The Policeman has no power to stop you…you could just run him over. But he has authority to stop you…and as you recognise and acknowledge that authority, you stop.

As a leader, in any capacity, do you hold your position with respect, and with authority?

If you do, then know that those who acknowledge your authority, will take every word you speak to heart… it is in knowing this, that as a leader, you must weigh your words carefully.

People will only follow in fear for just so long. Is it not better for them to follow you because your very words strengthen, lift up, inspire and encourage?

What type of leader are you?
